From Refugee to Refuge — Our Story
How one man’s journey became a mission to serve thousands.
From Burundi to Belonging: A Story of Faith, Survival, and Calling
Alliance Samuragwa grew up in Burundi, a nation deeply impacted by political division and violence between ethnic groups. As a young man, Alliance became involved in a peaceful movement focused on solidarity, reconciliation, and democracy. As the movement grew, the government responded with violence. Many people were killed, and Alliance himself was arrested, imprisoned, and tortured for his involvement.
After being left near a river to die, Alliance survived by God’s grace. With the help of others, he escaped Burundi and eventually made his way to the United States in 2014 as an asylum seeker.
When Alliance arrived in America, he had no family nearby, no job, very limited resources, and did not speak English. The early years were marked by fear, uncertainty, loneliness, and survival. While navigating the long asylum process, he depended on the kindness of strangers, churches, and friends who helped provide food, housing, and basic support during some of the hardest seasons of his life.
Yet even in those difficult moments, Alliance says he experienced the faithfulness of God in profound ways.
After receiving his work permit, Alliance spent several years working manual labor jobs while continuing to serve refugees and asylum seekers in his free time. In 2015, he began attending Gateway Church, where leaders recognized his compassion and calling to serve displaced families.
In 2020, Alliance began a residency at Gateway Church focused on refugee and asylum seeker ministry. Through that season, God expanded the vision not only to serve families directly, but to mobilize churches across Austin to welcome the nations with love, dignity, and practical support.
When I came to America, I had nothing — but God used people to show me that I was not forgotten. Their kindness changed my life and taught me what the love of Jesus truly looks like. — Alliance Samuragwa
Out of that vision, Alliance founded More Than Welcome
Today, More Than Welcome helps refugees and asylum seekers successfully transition into the community while experiencing the love and grace of Jesus. Through partnerships with local churches, volunteers, and community supporters, the ministry provides English classes, job assistance, family mentorship, healing groups, transportation support, and community gatherings where families from many nations can find hope and belonging.
More Than Welcome is about more than programs — it is about people. It is about the Church becoming the hands and feet of Jesus to the nations God has brought to our neighborhoods.
